Bad news to unassigned teachers from the Minister of National Education
"The number of teachers waiting for assignment is 264 thousands while the public need remains capped at 60 thousands. Let them steer for other jobs."
Minister of National Education Ömer Dinçer suggested to a large number of teachers left unassigned due to what the Ministers deems 'a traditional public administration weakness', that they should find themselves other jobs suitable to their professional orientation. Dinçer specified that while their number rises up to 264 thousands, the public need remains capped at 60 thousands.
Speaking to the coloumnist and journalist Lale Kemal from Taraf daily, Minister Ömer Dinçer criticised the fundamental attitude of Turkey's public administration of lacking an eye towards the future instead of dealing with daily problems. The focus in public administration is, according to the Minister, on problems rather than on goals. Dinçer indicated that the unassigned teachers problem arise from this traditional weakness. "If we, as Turkey, would have ever done a study on our teaching resources to determine how many teachers we'd need in a given year, maybe we wouldn't suffer from this problem." Dinçer announced the formation of a certain Planning and Improvement of Teaching Resources Group within the body of the Ministry, that is going to determine the yearly number of teacher requirement which will then be forwarded to the Supreme Council of Education. The Minister explained that from now on only the necessary number of teachers will be educated, as he stated that last year, they had officially announced the fields where teachers were required in certain fields, at around the time of university admissions.
Minister of National Education Dinçer also stated that the Supreme Council of Education (YÖK), which he called 'a leftover coup institution' as is also known by the public, is going to be transformed into a much more modern institution. Critics generally voice their opinions whenever there is discussion about the 'leftover coup institutions' that the Supreme Council of Education must completely go instead of being remodeled, for the sake of academic freedoms.
